Your road to becoming an Advanced Driver starts here
Our advanced driver training is open to any qualified driver over the age of 18 seeking to refine their existing skills, learn new skills and build confidence. The driving techniques are based on the Police Driver’s Handbook ‘Roadcraft’ and The Highway Code.
We have a small section dedicated to those who would like to take the advanced driving test. You can do this as well as the advanced riding test, or even if you don’t ride a motorcycle. Our advanced driving course is open to anyone with a full UK car driving licence, and our tutors will help you to develop your attitude and driving skills based on the Police Driver’s Handbook ‘Roadcraft’, and on ‘The Highway Code’, so that you become a safer and more confident driver, and (if you choose to take it) to pass the RoSPA advanced driving test.
We are affiliated with RoSPA and we are run entirely by volunteers on a not-for-profit basis. The cost of the course simply covers the expense of running group.
The principal reason we exist is to offer training to members, usually in preparing for their RoSPA Advanced Test. This is provided to new Associate Members starting their training and also to existing Full Members for their three yearly re-test (which is a requirement for continued membership). We currently have about 90 members.
- To encourage and train Associate members to prepare for and pass their RoSPA Advanced Driving test.
- To publicise RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders (RoADAR) Association and its work.
- To adopt the Highway Code as the guide to good driving / riding practice and to acknowledge the “System” as recommended in the Police manual, “Motorcycle Roadcraft” as the standard by which we drive / ride.
- To promote the interests of road safety in association with the Police and other road safety organisations.
- To improve standards of driving / riding
We have for many years been a advanced motorcycle group – in 2024 we added a car section and we are gradually building up the car driving side.
There is no separate membership for the two sections, even though we operate independently, we are governed by one committee. Advanced training is managed through a network of qualified tutors all of whom are volunteers. The group is run by its own voluntary Committee made up from members and any organised ride or event is open to all members.
We are working on a fully automated system but in the meantime simply contact membership@rospabikers.club. Acceptance is automatic, once complete you will be contacted by someone from the Training Team who will take you through the allocation process. You can also contact our driving lead at drivers@rospabikers.club
The joining fee is £39, annual membership is only £20 pa.
All our training is carried out one-to-one, your allocated Tutor will be your mentor through the whole period that you are training, so it is therefore important that we make sure you are paired with a Tutor who is well matched to your needs and able to plan your progress.
All of our Tutors are made up from enthusiast members who volunteer their time for the benefit of other members.
All of our Tutors will have been themselves tested to the very highest standard as part of their qualification process. They also undergo regular additional training and monitoring to ensure they are able to offer the very best training, matching these standards.
The training team consists of the Chief Training Officer, Senior Tutors and Tutors. They meet regularly to discuss training matters and ensure high standards of training.
Once your application has been accepted, we will pair you up with one of our qualified volunteer tutors. Your tutor will contact you to answer any questions you may have and to arrange your first practical one-to-one session. Tutors give their time for free, so you will need some flexibility in the dates and times you can meet, and you will also need to practise in between sessions.
Tuition is in your own car, at a time and place convenient to both you and your tutor, and is free of charge. There is the cost of joining the Group, obtaining your own copies of Roadcraft and The Highway Code, and the cost of fuel for your car, but nothing else.
All of our tutors have passed the RoSPA advanced test at Gold, undertaken further specialist tutor training to attain a RoSPA tutor qualification, and are regularly reassessed to ensure standards set by RoSPA and the Group are maintained.
As soon as possible after joining the group, you will be allocated your own tutor and he/she will serve as your mentor until such time as you have passed your test.
If for any reason you find that you are not happy with your tutor every effort will be made to allocate a new tutor, as we are fully aware that not everyone will get on together. Once you have been paired up, it will be your responsibility to contact your trainer so that a mutually agreeable time, date and place can be arranged to meet. Should you be unable to keep your appointment please contact your tutor and cancel as soon as you can. Please, DO NOT just fail to turn up.
The advanced driving test is conducted by a RoSPA examiner, lasts for just over an hour, and covers various types of road. The examiner will assess the whole drive – was it safe, smooth, systematic, and with good progress? – and if passed will award a grade – Gold, Silver or Bronze. A detailed three page written report follows in the post.
Your tutor will apprise you from time to time as to your progress compared with the above grades, and will encourage you to take the test when you both feel you are ready. Remember, you do not have to take the test (there is a separate test fee for it) but it would provide a fitting end to all your hard work.
Remember this is not compulsory, it is designed to provide a fitting end to all your hard work.
